art, and accessories store in Gaithersburg, Maryland, introduces a fresh
exuberant approach to modern to Washington, DC. Owner Nidhi Gupta encourages

with a touch of the hand. “I want to capture the spirit of masti, which means
to be intoxicated with life.” |

Mod Decor’s constantly changing
collection of art, furnishings, and accessories reveals her commitment to the
new and her love of discovery. She strives to help clients select objects for
their environment that speak for them, that tell a story about them and their
space. “Different areas of the home can create a different mood, show a
different side of us. You can be as colorful, as adventurous as you want in
creating your personal mix of styles.”
Until age nine, Gupta grew up in Northern
India. A love of color defines her most salient early memories. ”In
India we celebrate with color. During Holi, the religious festival that
marks the beginning of spring, everyone dresses in white and we toss
bright colors at each other in celebration of renewal. At family
weddings, brides wore the traditional burgundy, gold, and saffron, but I
particularly remember the aunt who chose deep fuchsia as her color. It
was such an erotic statement, I never forgot the power of that
choice.”
Gupta, whose own home features fuchsia light
bulbs in the kitchen and a wall painted nine colors and glazed in silver
and gold, encourages her clients to bring some level of color into
theirs. “In Western societies our lives are taken over by work and the
fast pace we demand of ourselves, managing family, home, and work. Color
brings positive restorative energy into our lives. Every home, even
those with a subdued traditional palette, can benefit from the power of
color.”
Before launching Mod Decor, Gupta, who
studied for a Masters degree in information systems, worked in business
strategy development for such Fortune 100 companies as Sprint and
Lucent. Drawn to interior design, she became an invaluable
resource to friends and family who turned to her for design advice and
help locating accessories and furnishings not then readily available in
the Washington, DC market. She traveled extensively
throughout Europe where she relished discovering exceptional and unique
furnishings and art for their home. |
